Resources for Student Respondents

Student Respondent Services

Student Respondent Services is available to assist students accused of sexual violence, sexual harassment, sex discrimination, or other Title IX-related prohibited behavior at UCSB. The program provides a neutral contact for students identified as “respondents” in a Title IX process. Student Respondent Services coordinators can provide the following types of assistance to student respondents.

  • Emotional and/or Mental Health Support Referrals: Student Respondent Services coordinators can connect student respondents to campus or community resources that can provide emotional and mental health support.
  • Assistance in Navigating the Title IX Process – Policies, Procedures, and Interim Measures: Student Respondent Services coordinators are available to assist student respondents in reviewing and understanding the UC policies and procedures relevant to their Title IX case. In some situations, interim protective measures, such as No-Contact Orders or exclusions from campus properties, are put in place while the University responds to Title IX reports. These measures are implemented to ensure the safety, well-being, and equal access to University programs and activities of its students. Student Respondent Services coordinators are trained to assist student respondents in navigating these measures, and can coordinate referrals to other campus offices that can also work with the respondents to address any concerns.
  • Additional Supportive Measures: Student Respondent Services coordinators can provide assistance with accessing accommodations, such as academic, student employment, and housing assistance.

Note on Privacy vs. Confidentiality

Student Respondent Services coordinators do not advocate on behalf of respondents or advise respondents on how best to respond to a Title IX investigation. The coordinator’s role is to ensure the respondent has a clear understanding of Title IX policies and procedures, and their rights and options in a Title IX response process. While the conversations between respondents and Student Respondent Services coordinators are kept private, the program does not offer complete confidentiality in the way a licensed counselor or attorney would. Because of this, any information shared with a Student Respondent Services coordinator concerning the details of a reported incident of sexual violence, sexual harassment, or other Title IX-related prohibited behavior must be shared with the Title IX Office.

Resources for Employee Respondents

The two offices listed below are the most appropriate campus resources for UCSB employees accused of sexual violence, sexual harassment, sex discrimination, or other Title IX-related prohibited behavior. These offices differ from the Student Respondent Services program in that they are designated Confidential Resources, meaning they do not release a person’s information to anyone without the respondent’s written consent, unless legally mandated. It is also important to note that while these offices are the most appropriate campus resources for employee respondents, their services and programming are not dedicated to assisting impacted parties or people participating in a Title IX response process (as CARE and Student Respondent Services are).
